Applications | Photonics Lubrication & Optical Fluids
Optical fluids, PPE lubricants and greases, vacuum fluids, and connector lubricants for photonic, laser, and electro-optic systems.
In a photonic system, the fluid is part of the optical path or sits right next to it. A lubricant that evaporates leaves a film on a lens. An index-matching fluid that yellows or clouds costs signal. SantoLubes builds its photonics portfolio on high-purity polyphenyl ether (PPE) chemistry, the lowest-volatility class of synthetic fluids, so it stays clear, stays put, and stays stable.
Our photonics portfolio includes SantoLight™ optical fluids, SantoLubes® PPE base fluids for specialty lubricants and greases, SantoVac® vacuum fluids for optical coating systems, ACCL® connector lubricants, and SantoRad™ radiation-resistant fluids for space and nuclear optics.
Optical-Grade Clarity & Index Matching
Ultra-Low Volatility Near Sensitive Optics
Radiation & Thermal Stability
Photonic assemblies combine precision optics, moving mechanisms, heat sources, and electronics in tight spaces. Any fluid that migrates, outgasses, or degrades shows up as scatter, loss, or drift. SantoLubes technologies help support:
Match optical clarity, index matching, low volatility, radiation stability, and connector protection to each part of your photonic system.
Photonic systems need different fluid behaviors across optical interfaces, precision mechanisms, vacuum hardware, electronics, and harsh-environment payloads. SantoLubes offers PPE technologies matched to each.
Chemically inert, optical-grade PPE fluid for sensitive photonic and electro-optic devices.
Low-volatility PPE fluids for optomechanical lubricants, greases, and optical coating vacuum systems.
Protect the electrical side of photonic modules, lasers, and telecom hardware.
PPE fluids for optical systems exposed to ionizing radiation and high temperature.

Note: Product selection depends on system design, optical materials and coatings, temperature range, vacuum level, radiation exposure, cleanliness requirements, and qualification requirements.
Every lubricant and grease inside an optical housing gives off some vapor. Over months of operation, that vapor condenses on the coldest surfaces nearby, which are often lenses, mirrors, and windows. The result is haze, scatter, and a slow loss of performance that is hard to trace.
PPE fluids have the lowest volatility of any synthetic fluid class. Using PPE-based optical fluids, lubricants, and greases in and around the optical path limits that source of contamination and extends the time between cleaning or rework.
Optical fluids and lubricants for new device designs and production.
Low-volatility lubrication for mounts, stages, and focus mechanisms.
Stable fluids for optics that run hot and stay aligned.
Connector protection for transceivers and network equipment.
Radiation-stable fluids for payloads and sensors.
Clean, stable fluids for instruments where accuracy matters.
Not every photonic assembly fits an off-the-shelf fluid. SantoLubes can help evaluate refractive index needs, optical materials and coatings, temperature range, volatility limits, radiation exposure, and service-life targets.
Every photonic system has its own materials and operating conditions. SantoLubes provides technical information, sample material, and consultation to help you qualify the right fluid.

Answers to common questions about SantoLubes technologies in photonics applications.
Photonic systems use optical fluids for index matching between components, low-volatility lubricants and greases for optomechanical mechanisms, vacuum pump fluids for optical coating equipment, and connector lubricants for the electronics. SantoLubes covers these needs with SantoLight™, SantoLubes® PPE base fluids, SantoVac®, ACCL®, and SantoRad™ technologies.
Lubricant vapor condenses on nearby optical surfaces and builds up as haze over time. PPE fluids have the lowest volatility of any synthetic fluid class, which limits that contamination and helps optical assemblies hold their performance longer.
SantoLight™ SL-5262 is a high-purity PPE optical fluid for photonic and electro-optic devices. Its high refractive index supports index matching between optical components to reduce reflection loss. Low particulate and low fluorescence protect signal quality, and it is rated from -40°C to +150°C.
Yes. SantoLubes® OS-124 and OS-138 PPE base fluids are used to formulate specialty lubricants and greases with very low volatility and broad compatibility with metals, plastics, and elastomers. They suit focus drives, stages, mounts, and gimbals where lubricant vapor must stay off the optics. Grade and formulation depend on the mechanism, so our team reviews each application.
ACCL® connector lubricants protect contacts in transceivers, laser modules, and network equipment from fretting and corrosion while keeping contact resistance low and stable. ACCL 53T conforms to Telcordia GR-78, GR-317, and GR-121 for telecom equipment.
Yes. Our team can evaluate refractive index, optical materials and coatings, temperature, volatility limits, radiation exposure, and connector reliability to recommend or help develop the right fluid. Custom formulation and private-label work is available through our affiliate, SantoTolling.
