BRAND OVERVIEW

SantoVac®

SantoVac fluids falls within the class of PPEs (Polyphenyl Ethers).

PPEs are considered the fluids of choice since they have low volatility and are resistant to thermal degradation at temperatures reaching 450°C (840°F), the highest in the synthetic fluids class. Because of the low volatility and ability to withstand extremely high temperatures, SantoVac fluids are suitable for use in equipment that operates in extreme environments, such as those encountered in aerospace applications, and as diffusion pump fluids. In addition to these attributes, these fluids are resistant to chemical and ionizing radiation attacks, which makes their use suitable in and around equipment that operates in chemical and ionizing radiation-producing environments.

What is SantoVac® and what makes it different from other vacuum pump fluids?

SantoVac® is a family of Polyphenyl Ether (PPE)-based vacuum fluids engineered for applications where conventional pump fluids fall short. What sets SantoVac apart is the inherent chemistry of PPE — not additive packages. PPE fluids deliver the lowest volatility of any synthetic fluid class, thermal stability up to 450°C (840°F), and natural resistance to oxidation, chemical attack, and ionizing radiation. The result is a fluid that outperforms under extreme conditions and stays in service longer, reducing pump maintenance and downtime.

SantoVac® 5 PPE produces an ultimate vacuum of 5×10⁻¹⁰ Torr or greater at 25°C — among the deepest achievable with a diffusion pump fluid. It is MIL-L-87100 compliant, exhibits essentially zero backstreaming, and is recognized as the industry benchmark for commercial vacuum diffusion pump operation. It balances extreme vacuum performance with long service life and cost-effective operation.

Both are PPE-based diffusion pump fluids, but they serve different application demands. SantoVac® 5 PPE is the industry-standard choice for commercial vacuum systems requiring ultra-high vacuum performance. SantoVac® 5P Ultra is a higher-purity refinement of the same chemistry, developed specifically for semiconductor fabrication and other critical processes where any level of contamination is unacceptable. Its extremely low backstreaming characteristic — a direct result of elevated purity — makes it the preferred fluid for clean-room and contamination-sensitive environments.

Yes. SantoVac® PPE fluids are Polyphenyl Ether-based — not PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances). As regulatory pressure on PFAS compounds increases across industries, SantoVac® provides a proven, high-performance alternative that meets or exceeds the vacuum performance of PFPE fluids without the environmental and compliance liabilities. SantoVac® is an established PFAS-free option with decades of service history in aerospace, semiconductor, and industrial vacuum applications.

SantoVac® fluids are specified across a broad range of demanding industries and applications, including aerospace systems, semiconductor fabrication, electronics manufacturing, analytical and laboratory instrumentation, high-vacuum research environments, and industrial manufacturing. Any application requiring a stable, low-volatility fluid that maintains performance under high temperature, chemical exposure, or radiation is a candidate for SantoVac®.

SantoVac®'s low volatility means less fluid is lost to evaporation during operation, keeping vapor pressure minimal and the system cleaner over time. Its thermal stability prevents fluid breakdown at elevated operating temperatures, and its chemical inertness eliminates the reactive degradation that shortens pump service intervals with conventional fluids. The cumulative effect is longer fluid life, fewer fluid changes, reduced pump wear, and lower total cost of ownership compared to standard synthetic or mineral-based pump fluids.

Selection depends on your required vacuum level, operating temperature, purity demands, and system type. SantoVac® 9 is optimized for commercial diffusion pumps requiring reliable 10⁻⁸ Torr performance at a lower cost. SantoVac® 5 PPE targets applications demanding 5×10⁻¹⁰ Torr with MIL-spec compliance. SantoVac® 5P Ultra is the choice when contamination-free, semiconductor-grade purity is required. Base fluids OS-124, OS-138, and OS-105 ADE are used in specialty lubricant and grease formulation.
